Continuing an extraordinarily successful night for the musical film - which had already scooped Best Original Score, Song and Screenplay before Gosling’s triumph - he paid emotional tribute to his partner Eva Mendes.
He told the A-list audience how she had helped nurse his brother-in-law during a tragic cancer fight, thus enabling him to go off and shoot the movie.

You don’t get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain of people
“You don’t get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain of people,” he said.
“I just want to thank one person properly: when I was singing and dancing and having one of the best experiences anyone could have on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.
“If she hadn’t taken all that on so I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me.”
He added: “So sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, I love you. If I can, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Carlos Mendez. Thank you very much.”
