Avatar becomes quickest movie to smash $1bn mark
AVATAR has become the fastest movie ever to reach the $1bn (£625.6m) mark in box offices across the globe, making its hefty price tag well worth it.
Avatar - which reportedly cost $300m (£186m) to make - soared past $1bn at the worldwide box office after just three weekends in release, already making it the fourth-biggest movie of all time.
Distributor 20th Century Fox said James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi epic earned more than $350m (£217m) in the US and more than $670m ( £415m) in the rest of the world after a mere 17 days.
The only movies ahead of it are Cameron’s "Titanic" ($1.8 bn; £1.1bn), "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ($1.12bn; 695m), and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" ($1.07bn; 664m).
