Deepika Padukone: Sexual harassment goes beyond gender
The Bollywood superstar - best known in the UK and in Hollywood for her work in xXx: Return of Xander Cage - is reported online to have been offered a “terrific” role alongside Ranbir Kapoor. The pair previously worked together on the likes of Bachna Ae Haseeno, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Tamasha, to mostly a positive reception. Interestingly, they were also an item: they began dating in 2008 and were speculated to have got engaged, but soon split amid claims of infidelity on his part.
They renewed their friendship when they next worked together, and now it seems they could be joining forces once more.
Luv Ranjan is directing the feature film, with Ajay Devgn also attached.
A source said, according to the Deccan Chronicle: “In spite of two solid male stars, Ranjan’s film has a terrific role for the female lead.
“Deepika is the first choice and there’s no reason why she would turn down a plum role like this.”
Padukone got married last year, and actor husband Ranveer Singh recently indicated that they will not be working together any time soon.
“My wife and I will not have a film together this year," he said, according to thenews.com.pk.
"I’m hoping that filmmakers will approach the two of us with a script that we like and can take it forward.
"I’m looking forward to sharing screen space with her."
They had worked together on the massively successful - yet also controversial - Padmaavat; as well as the likes of Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani.
“The chemistry between us is extra special. It has been seen and proven," Singh said.
"Much as I am truly, madly and deeply in love with her, I am aching to act with Deepika again.
"As a fan of her work, I have been waiting patiently for her to commit to a film. And I’m truly overjoyed that she has committed to working with Meghna Gulzar on Chhapaak."
Indeed, Chhapaak is the highly anticipated film which Padukone will also produce - about acid attack survivor Lakshmi Agarwal.
