Top Gun 2 DELAYED until 2020: Here’s why Tom Cruise fans have to wait another year
TOP GUN 2: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, has been delayed a year.
Top Gun 2 needs 'Ghost Goose' says actor Anthony Edwards
The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic is shooting this Autumn and was set to be released in July 2019.
However Top Gun: Maverick has now been delayed a year until June 26, 2020.
Cruise fans who saw the original will now see their wait for the follow-up extended to a whopping 34 years.
So just why is the film being delayed?
According to Deadline, Top Gun 2 needs the extra time to “allow the production to work out all the complex flight sequences so that the pic can be great.”
While another year’s wait may be an annoyance for fans, at least it sounds worth it to make sure the sequel isn’t a dud.
Last week Ed Harris and Jon Hamm were announced for mystery roles in the movie.
This casting updates follows another from Paramount Pictures which includes Thomasin McKenzie as the daughter of Jennifer Connelly’s character.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Connelly is being lined up to play a single mother who runs a bar near the Top Gun naval base.
Additionally Bashir Salahuddin will play an engineer and Charles Parnell, an admiral.
They’re joined by Jay Ellis, Monica Barbaro and Danny Ramirez as new pilots.
Meanwhile the main cast aside from Cruise’s Maverick sees Miles Teller playing Goose’s son and Val Kilmer as Iceman.
The former Batman star announced the news via his official Facebook account earlier this summer.
Kilmer wrote on his official Facebook page: “I’m officially in the sequel to TOPGUN.”
“I’m so looking forward to working with Tom, Joe and Jerry, all such unique pros.”
His announcement follows a previous confirmation back in June.
