Hurricane Sandy could be a turning point for Barack Obama
OUR son in New York is without water since his apartment block needs power to provide the supply. I hope he is able to hold out a saucepan and collect rainwater by now or buy it in bottles at least.
The repercussions of natural disasters are frightening: the loss of life, chaos of airport closures, flooded subways,
people stranded away from home, even presidential electioneering on hold.
Politics is often about the luck of timing and President Obama could be helped in his bid to clinch a second term by
hurricane Sandy.
He has the greater exposure on air, far more chance than Mitt Romney to play a prominent, nerve-steadying role.
Obama could blow it but the chance to look and sound statesmanlike at such a time of crisis goes a long way.
Remember Gordon Brown’s popularity bounce when we were stricken with floods early on in his premiership?
He very nearly called a snap election on the strength of it. The polls were in his favour.
Some of us are rather glad that his nerve failed him and he didn’t seize the moment and have a bash
