"The disease is now advanced to stage four, and therefore, his life expectancy is unfortunately significantly reduced."
Fans of the actor have started a change.org petition in the hope that a statue of Stefan will be erected in his home town of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland.
The petition aims to "forever immortalise and honour his amazing legacy" and has already gained more than 27,000 signatures.
A GoFundMe campaign to pay for treatment for the actor has also raised £110,000.
