The actor, who began the proceedings at the star-studded event, took the chance to criticise Donald Trump, who is hoping to enforce a Muslim travel ban.
He started the political-fuelled ceremony with a message encouraging immigration in the United States.
Ashton, 38, told the audience: "Good evening, fellow SAG-AFTRA members, and everybody at home, and everybody in airports that belong in my America.
"You are a part of the fabric of who we are. And we love you and we welcome you."
Following his message on-stage, he later shared his reasons for speaking out on his Twitter account.

He wrote: "If standing for the America that doesn't discriminate makes me a left wing actor who is out of touch. F*** it.
"As an American I respect my president but I do not respect this policy. #ABetterWAy. I believe in protecting borders. I believe in enable safety and security but we do so with honour.
"We are Americans #ABetterWay. This isn't no nonsense policy this is no sense policy #ABetterWay.

Dev also slammed the president and called the ban horrible and divisive
Ashton wasn't the only star to speak on Trump's new policy at the awards. Dev Patel slammed the Republican for his "divisive and horrible" travel ban.
Speaking on the red carpet, he told People: "I just flew in from India a day ago. When I heard the news it was utterly devastating.
"The first thing that came into my head was the children who arrive on these shores with hope in their eyes and their hearts.
"It's horrible. It's divisive. I hope something changes and something can be done because it really is terrible."
