Day & Night: Get in shape like the stars
WE don’t all have access to the best personal trainers and nutritionists but luckily many of their star clients have willingly passed on their secrets.
For Amanda Seyfried and Drew Barrymore moderation is key to keeping in shape
While there’s been plenty of bizarre, head-scratching fitness “advice” from some of Hollywood’s finest – yes, Gwyneth, we’re looking at you – it’s great that many famous faces from both sides of the pond keep their enviable figures in top form with reasonable and relatable diets that have room for indulgence, and some canny shortcuts along the way.
So, don’t chuck out the mince pies just yet. We’re counting down some of the smartest celeb diet tips...
DREW BARRYMORE
She may have become infamous for youthful excess, but these days Drew (right) is all about moderation.
“I just think you should eat less of everything,” says the 41-year-old Charlie’s Angels star.
“A little bit less. I don’t want to live a life where you can’t have what you want; it just makes you want it more.” Wise words.
KATHERINE JENKINS
Classical singer Katherine had shed her baby weight just seven months after giving birth to daughter Aaliyah in September 2015.
The 35-year-old tells us how: “I’ve always been into fitness and I kept it going through my pregnancy.
“Obviously, you have to adapt things when you’re pregnant. I just walked a lot and calmed down the exercise but did everything in moderation.”
SAM SMITH
The slimline crooner can’t sing enough praises about his simple fitness secret. The 24-year-old Stay With Me hitmaker, who lost three stone this year, reveals: “I’m just not eating like a pig any more. That’s basically it!”
And apparently the former porker now snacks on herb-infused ice cubes as a treat. Yummy!
REBECCA ADLINGTON
Former Olympic swimmer Rebecca now keeps her athletic physique in check by swapping calorific meals for nutritious grub.
I just think you should eat less of everything
“It may sound crazy but it’s only since retiring from competing in 2013 that I’ve realised the importance of having a healthy diet,” says the 27-year-old.
“Now if I eat a chocolate bar, a new bit of fat appears on my body, so I do homemade granola for breakfast and poached eggs and avocado on toast for lunch.”

JOE WICKS
Otherwise known as The Body Coach, Joe has dedicated his life to helping people get into shape.
But what’s the 30-year-old fitness guru’s top tip? “You’ve got to prep your own meals like a boss, so when you’re leaving the house, you’ve got your lunch and your dinner sorted.”
No more stopping by the chippy on the way home, then.
COLEEN ROONEY
Meanwhile mother-of-three Coleen insists that keeping up with your energetic children is the best exercise.
The 30-year-old, who showed off her toned bikini body just months after giving birth to her and England Captain Wayne Rooney’s third son Kit in January, says: “Skipping has got my body fit and I work out with a trainer, but I’ve got back in shape mainly from running round with the kids – it’s non-stop from the time you wake up until when you go to bed.”

SCARLETT MOFFATT
Reigning Queen of the Jungle Scarlett went from size 18 to a slender size eight in just six months thanks to a healthy diet and interval training (alternating levels of exercise between high and low-intensity activity).
The Gogglebox star advises: “Do interval training in really short bursts. My body still aches the next day but it’s definitely worth it. Now I can run up the stairs without getting out of breath!” Wait for us, Scarlett.
AMANDA SEYFRIED
Moderation is the key to keeping in shape for Amanda. The Mamma Mia star, 31, ditches the gym for a 30-minute run five days a week and Pilates on weekends.
“I used to live, eat and sleep to a rigorous exercise schedule and couldn’t enjoy myself if I didn’t exercise. And then I realised, ‘What a waste of time!’ My soft parts are probably never going to go away.”

LORRAINE KELLY
TV presenter Lorraine credits Zumba, the dance fitness classes, for her dramatic weight loss.
The 57-year-old, who doesn’t believe in diets, says: “The classes are just so much fun – it’s like being at a disco. I’ve got a really pert bottom now! And I’ve got a waist – it goes in, instead of the middle-aged spread that was there a few years ago.”
JENNIFER GARNER
Mum-of-three Jennifer reckons it’s important to make time for fitness no matter how busy life gets.

The actress, 44, says: “I started feeling like I didn’t have time or energy for exercise, but now I realise I didn’t have energy because I wasn’t exercising. So I do an hour of Pilates at 6 or 7am… and if I need to cancel, I cancel.”
She also offers an alternative to those calorific cravings. “I can’t not have carbs. If I’m going to have potatoes, I’ll have sweet potatoes and I won’t fry them.”
MIRANDA KERR
Model Miranda insists her enviable physique is the result of simple mathematics.
The 33-year-old mum-of-one says: “I’m pretty much 80 per cent healthy and 20 per cent indulgent, because I don’t believe in depriving myself.”
Whoops! We’ve been doing things the other way around.
