The 72-year-old would have starred as Ross Geller’s (David Schwimmer) father-in-law when he married British partner Emily Waltham (Helen Baxendale) at the end of season four.
The musician was offered the cameo in the late 1990s but he was forced to turn it down because it was a "very busy time" for him.
Leslie Litt, the Emmy-nominated casting director, said: "I went through his manager and gave him all the details. One day, someone in the office brought me a faxed letter written to me by Paul himself."

Sadly, the star couldn't squeeze an acting role into his busy schedule.
"He thanked me for my interest and said how flattered he was, but it was a very busy time for him," Leslie told the Huffington Post.
Instead the role of Stephen Waltham went to Scottish thespian Tom Conti, 73.
The 1998 two-part episode titled 'The One With Ross's Wedding' is one of the most famous in the smash hit TV series.
