Miranda Hart bedridden and 'housebound for years' after hitting 'rock bottom'
Miranda Hart had been left bedridden and has now opened up about her health woes.
Miranda Hart said she suffered a "total collapse" amid a 30-year battle with an undiagnosed illness. In a new interview, the actress, 51, who wrapped up filming Miranda in 2015, told how she struggled to leave the house and lived a life without "joy".
The actress revealed how undiagnosed Lyme disease developed into myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) - commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome.
Speaking to The Times, the comedian explained: "I lost my joy and know that I hadn’t enjoyed my career in the way that I knew I could have if I hadn’t been ill.
"I was housebound and bedbound for years. I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a social life. I didn’t have any responsibilities or identities."
The TV star said she had been functioning during the six years Miranda was being broadcast.
Miranda explained she privately told doctors she was leading a "half-life" and a very "debilitating life" but had no idea why she felt unwell leading her to hit "rock bottom".
Further blood tests revealed she had been living with undiagnosed Lyme disease having first fallen ill at 15.
During her teenage years, the actress contracted the disease while living in the United States while her father was working in Virginia.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks.
While she has "not fully" recovered, Miranda hopes to get through this.
Miranda gave a rare insight into her long-term health battle in her new memoir, I Haven't Been Entirely Honest With You, in which she talks about her plight and the moment she 'collapsed' from ill health.
It comes as Miranda also confirmed she is married, announcing the news about her mystery new husband live on The One Show after a flurry of rumours.
