The Repair Shop star Jay Blades opened up about the struggles he faced during his childhood. The 50-year-old previously recounted asking a teacher when people normally learn to read, under the impression it occurred at a university level.

He was left feeling devastated upon learning that wasn't the case. At school, Jay was categorised within the "Ls" group, dubbed "learners", but for him and classmates, it signalled "losers" more than anything else.

Blades explained: "The L became for loser rather than for learning, so they told us effectively we weren't there to learn."

He lamented the stark contrast between how his group was treated compared to other students, noting the disparate support levels and attention from teachers.

He said "When the teacher tells you you're a dunce and you're never going to amount to anything, that sticks with you."

Blades later recounted his experience with a careers teacher to BBC's Zoe Ball, saying: "My careers teacher said I wasn't going to amount to anything. You know when everybody used to line up to see the careers officer?"

"He saw me come to the table and said, 'Blades, you're going to amount to nothing - next!' And he looked behind me." Speaking to Radio Times, Blades reflected on being told he would never succeed and described that as a crushing blow to hear at such a young age.

He shared: "People are embarrassed to admit they're dyslexic. I'm 51-years-old, and I'm getting taught like I'm a kid again."

Blades has been dropped from The Repair Shop Tour after being charged with controlling and coercive behaviour against his estranged wife.

The TV presenter, who has fronted the BBC series for seven years, will not be joining his co-hosts on the road for the upcoming theatre tour.

West Mercia Police launched an investigation into Blades after Lisa Zbozen, 43, accused him of controlling and coercive behaviour. The alleged behaviour includes physical and emotional abuse, according to court documents.

Blades appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Friday, 13 September and is due at Worcester Crown Court on Friday (October 11).
