Boris Johnson confronts Piers Morgan on camera as Talk TV star brands him 'liar'

Boris Johnson questioned why Piers Morgan has not let him appear on his Talk TV programme, despite the latter claiming he had been invited "endless times".

Boris Johnson rejects claims that he is a 'liar'

Five years after they shared an awkward exchange when the former prime minister hid in a freezer to avoid a TV interview with Good Morning Britain (which Piers fronted at the time), the gloves for Boris Johnson and Piers Morgan are off once more.

In a video shared on Piers' Instagram, Boris calls the presenter a "big girl's blouse" for not inviting him to appear on his Talk TV show.

However, Piers quickly refuted those claims in a searing caption underneath the video where he teased Boris for "finally coming out of the fridge".

In the clip, Boris said: "Piers, why do you never let me come on your show? You big girl's blouse."

Piers typed back: "BREAKING: Boris has finally come out of hiding in the fridge… to lie about not being invited onto ⁦‪@piersmorganuncensored‬⁩ (he has turned us down endless times) and to call me a 'big girl's blouse…"

The surprising exchange between the pair quickly sparked debate in the comments as many shared their admiration for Boris.

One commented: "Have to like this man.". Another responded: "He is quite funny.". A third remarked: "Boris is so funny. As are you Piers Morgan."

In 2019, Boris retreated into a fridge as he sought to avoid a TV interview, amid rattled nerves at CCHQ over a narrowing in the opinion polls.

The prime minister was ambushed by the Good Morning Britain producer, Jonathan Swain, during a pre-dawn visit to Modern Milkman, a business in the Tory-held constituency of Pudsey, in Yorkshire.

When Swain first approached Boris, he asked: “Morning prime minister, would you come on Good Morning Britain, prime minister?” Boris' aide can be heard mouthing “oh for f***’s sake” in response.

The show’s hosts, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, appeared shocked by the aide’s reaction. Swain went on to say: “I’ve just had a reaction from one of the minders. OK, no need to push, thank you very much,” with Reid exclaiming: “The look on his face, that minder.”

When Swain pressed the prime minister, stating he was live on the show, Boris replied “I’ll be with you in a second” and walked off, before Piers exclaims “he’s gone into the fridge”. Boris walked inside a fridge stacked with milk bottles with his aides. One person could be heard saying: “It’s a bunker.”

Conservative sources subsequently insisted that Johnson was “categorically not hiding” in the fridge, from which Boris emerged carrying a crate of milk bottles – but instead his aides were taking a moment to prep the PM for a separate, pre-agreed interview.

During the exchange, Swain asked if Boris would come on the programme and “deliver on your promise to talk to Piers and Susanna. We’re ready to go, we’re live on ITV right now.

"Prime minister, we have an earpiece in my pocket. You are more than welcome to come on.”

Swain told Piers and Susanna that he was being pushed and shoved by one of the minders. “It’s a very frosty reception we’ve had so far,” Swain said after Johnson disappeared, to which Piers responded: “That was heroic work.”

Tory aides have closely controlled the PM’s appearances since a chaotic day on Monday. Boris pocketed a journalist’s phone during a TV interview rather than look at a picture of a four-year-old boy asleep on the floor at a Leeds hospital.
