The Loose Women star and the GB News presenter called it quits on their marriage earlier this year after she found messages he'd sent to another woman.
Since then the question of who will get collie cross Maggie has been at the centre of their split.
And now a friend says: "Eamonn has resigned himself to the fact that he will lose ownership of Maggie. He loves that dog with all his heart but it looks like Ruth will be the dog's main carer.
"When things settle, he'll hopefully be able to see Maggie from time to time."
The couple - who also have son Jack together - have had Maggie for 14 years. Eamonn recently spoke out on Maggie's health woes as he insisted that she was still in "better shape" than him amid his own personal health problems.
The former This Morning host said: "A lot of you wondering about Maggie. She’s had an op to remove a growth. All well. Not bad for a 14-year-old! In fact, she’s in better shape than me."
And Ruth also shed light on her beloved pet's procedure adding: "Maggie had a little wart removed this morning under sedation so she's feeling a bit sorry for herself this afternoon! Lots of TLC from Mummy required."

Last week Express Online revealed the couple are now only communicating through their lawyers.
Ruth has hired a £400-an-hour lawyer called Catherine Costley, worked under the country's top divorce lawyer, "Steel Magnolia" Baroness Fiona Shackleton, who represented Charles in his split from Diana, and Sir Paul McCartney, turned to her several months ago as she seeks to end her 14-year marriage to Eamonn with a financial settlement.
At the weekend, he and new girlfriend Katie Alexander were pictured together during a stop on their romantic cruise. They enjoyed a night out in Ibiza Town on Friday where he was seen playfully touching Katie's bottom.
Then on Saturday they went on a shopping trip around the capital's cobbled streets. Divorced mum Katie, 42, has been seen driving a £50,000 Mercedes and wearing expensive jewellery.

Eamonn also enjoyed a night out with Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale.
The actress posted a snap of them together with Kate throwing her leg above the presenter's shoulder onto a wall while the broadcaster gave a cheeky facial expression.
Kate later proudly introduced Eamonn to one of her favourite pastimes - posing with phallic fruit and vegetables - which she dubbed "suggestive veg".
The two can be seen sitting down at a table with the on-screen star proudly holding up a cucumber and two strategically placed lemons.
For one of the snaps, the Northern Irish broadcaster can even be seen sticking his tongue out.
While Eamonn plays up for the camera, behind the scenes he's hired lawyer Rachael Somerset from London-based firm Level to start his divorce proceedings.
Ruth and Eamonn shared a £3.5million five-bedroom home in Weybridge, Surrey, where she has remained since the split. Eamonn has moved into a flat nearby.
Opening up about the split with Ruth in June at the TRIC Awards Eamonn said: "It's too early to say but I hope we can still be friends."
