Kate Garraway was flooded with support as she shared a heartbreaking post about those in need of carers. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, became a carer for her husband Derek Draper after he fell seriously ill with Covid.

Derek, who was a political lobbyist, died aged 56 in January after a lengthy battle with the long-term effects of Covid.

Since 2021, Kate has allowed cameras into her home to follow her journey into looking after Derek. The final documentary showed the final years of Derek's life, coming after Finding Derek (2021) and Caring for Derek (2022).

Sharing a clip from Derek's Story on Instagram, Kate opened up about the overwhelming amount of messages she received from people in desperate need of care.

"The one thing Derek has taught me is never give up fighting for what is right," Kate said in the clip. "It's not about Derek or me, it's about having a society where caring isn't a luxury."

Kate broke down in tears as she continued opening cards with messages thanking her for being a notable and emerging voice for carers.

She declared: "We are all going to need it. And it's not about somebody coming round to cut up your food because you're feeling a bit weak. It's about giving you a chance of living."

The mum-of-two added: "The skill of a carer to spot when things are changing has saved Derek's life so many times over the last four years and yes, it was finally taken, but my god those four years had value."

Derek's Story has been nominated for a National Television Award, which Kate referenced in the caption. The TV star wrote: "I have been inundated with the most incredible & heartbreaking messages from thousands of vulnerable people in need and also carers, professional & those unpaid - urging me to keep going.

"Please take a moment to watch this clip from our @itv @officialntas nominated documentary and vote ( link in bio) . For those in need, & ofcourse one day that will be all of us , it means so much. I hope you all have a #safe & #peaceful #sunday. And in advance thank you it means so much."

Kate was inundated with messages from fans who thanked fans for raising awareness on the subject. One wrote: "So so true Kate. good care shouldn't be a luxury afforded to a minority but sadly it all too often is. Thank you for your tireless energy and passion in raising awareness about this which affects us all as a society."

Another penned: "You are an inspiration to us unpaid carers. You are working so hard to try and make it fair for us. Documentaries about carers are so needed as no one understands how hard it is until you are in the situation."

A third echoed: "There is a forgotten community out there and no government seems to have the will to tackle what is a huge and complex issue. Thank you Kate."
