Following reports of his death, tributes have poured in for Fame Academy contestant Gary Phelan.

The reality show contestant hailed from Cramlington, Newcastle, and featured in the second series of Fame Academy where the hopefuls bid to impress headmaster Richard Park and judges Robin Gibb and David and Carrie Grant.

Following his appearance on the BBC show he continued his music career where he toured the country as well as writing and recording music.

Gary recently moved to Dubai where he was a popular attraction on the pub and bar circuit in the UAE.

His death last month was confirmed by several friends on social media.

One tribute on Facebook said: "We had some wonderful times together in our twenties.

“I played bass for him for five years, he took me on a journey touring the UK and recording in top studios.

“We partied, we played and we worked our a***s off. Gary opened up the world for me musically and professionally and we shared some once in a lifetime moments together - I'll always be grateful."

During his time appearing on Fame Academy Gary had made it into the house and was saved by fellow students and then twice by the show’s fans.

He performed covers of classic songs like Summer in the City, before being the fourth student to be sent home.

Alex Park went on to win in the final that season, coming up against Alistair Griffin and Carolyn Goode.
