Sinead O'Connor sadly died at the age of 56 and the coroner previously confirmed to Express.co.uk, the Nothing Compares 2 U singer had died of natural causes in July 2023. The legendary Irish singer and activist had struggled with health issues over the years.

One year after her death the Irish Independent reported — citing the Grammy winner's death certificate — that she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

According to the publication, the certificate specifically said that Sinead's death was a result of "exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection".

They obtained a copy of her death certificate, which showed the exact cause of death as a combination of different health problems.

In a statement released after she died, Sinead's family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead.

"Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

Her death came just 18 months after the heartbreaking loss of her 17-year-old son Shane O'Connor in January 2022.

At the time of Sinead's death the Coronor's website shared that "no medical cause of death was given" after she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six months later a spokesperson for Southwark Coroners Court said: "This is to confirm that Ms O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death."

Sinead had just moved back to London at the start of July - calling the city her "home" - and described her hope and excitement at seeing the ballet and writing new songs in the days before she died.

The Irish singer-songwriter was married four times, tying the knot for the first time with drummer John Reynolds in 1987, with whom she welcomed her first child, son Jake.

She went on to welcome three more children a daughter named Roisin with John Waters, a son named Shane with Donal Lunny (who died at age 17 by suicide in 2022) and a son named Yeshua with Frank Bonadio.

Her final marriage was to psychotherapist Barry Herridge, a marriage that infamously ended 16 days after tying the knot in 2011.

Sinead found worldwide fame with the 1990s hit Nothing Compares 2 U.
