Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham has admitted that despite decades of work under his belt before landing the role of Davos Seaworth he was struggling financially. Before the epic fantasy drama, Liam had an impressive CV that included some huge hit movies and shows but revealed he "nearly lost his house".

The actor shared he only took one of his biggest roles in The Mummy 3 opposite Brendan Fraser to pay a tax bill. "At that stage [when he was cast] what am I 30, I think 35 years acting this year.

"So for 20 of those years, I was literally hand to mouth, nearly lost my house. I was really struggling, wondering if I could pay the mortgage next month for most of those 20 years.

"[This was] the first time I could actually go, 'we may be able to plan for a holiday next year'," he admitted at a recent IFTA acting masterclass in Dublin. "So you've got to like what you do, and because, if you're just doing it because you think it's a good idea, it will break you because of so much rejection," he advised.

Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons from 2012 and became a worldwide phenomenon. It turned all of the cast into worldwide stars and the fandom was and is still incredibly passionate about the show with Liam describing it as "nuts".

He recalled: "It was like being in a boy band. It was ridiculous to the extent that we had to have security. Spain was particularly bad. I remember they were at the transport to the hotel, they were in the corridors, they were kicking the doors in.

"In Bilbao, I had run out of underpants and I was going to the shop across the road to buy some."

The Game of Thrones said: "I walked out and Steve, who was part of the security team, as I was going out the lobby asked where I was going.

"He said he was coming with me. I had security coming with me to buy jocks!" he exclaimed as the audience laughed hysterically.

"So we went across and road and I was there in the jocks section and I turned around and there's Steve with his arms out and there are like 25 boys and girls! It was nuts, It was absolutely nuts.

"In Australia, in a country I’ve never been in, it was very, very odd turning around and being screamed at and...a woman fainting in front of me.

"We had super fans and we were signing t-shirts and they're crying their eyes out.

"I remember thinking 'Jesus I'm glad this didn't happen to me when I was 20 or I would have believed I was that great'," he laughed.
