Sir Rod Stewart has responded after he was "booed by the crowd" during his concert in Germany. The 79-year-old is currently touring in Europe and performed in Leipzig’s Quarterback Immobilien Arena on Friday, June 14.

While singing the 1991 hit Rhythm of the Heart, which he has described as a war song over the years, Sir Rod appeared to be jeered as photos of Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were shown.

As he saluted the Ukrainian leader while the country's flag was projected on screen, loud boos, shouts, and whistles could be heard from the crowd. Sir Rod has now defended his support of Ukraine, telling PA news agency: "I have supported the Ukrainian people throughout this war.

"From arranging for members of my family to take supplies to the country, to renting a house in the UK for a Ukrainian family, as well as employing two Ukrainians as part of my touring crew.

The Maggie May singer continued: "So yes, I do support Zelensky and the people of Ukraine, and I will continue to do so.

"Putin must be stopped. I'm having the time of my life playing for German audiences, sharing some special memories, and I'm looking forward to playing my remaining dates here."

Sir Rod has been vocal about his feelings towards Russia, branding Vladimir Putin an "a******e" back in February. "You let that a******e into Ukraine, he'll get into every NATO country," he said during an interview with Sky News.

He added: "And we'll have to join the army. We have to support Ukraine right to the end. Peace in the Middle East as well."

In 2022, Sir Rod dedicated an anti-war song to Ukraine during his upcoming tour. "I dedicate that to the Ukrainians, and we bring up a Ukrainian flag and Zelensky [on the big screen]," he said at the time.

Sir Rod said he and his wife Penny Lancaster, 53, wanted to take action after seeing horrific scenes on the news.

"When the war started, in this household we were shocked beyond shock," he explained. "Because I was born just after the war and so my family came through the Second World War, and to see another ground war with tanks, I never thought we’d see the day, it was just shocking and it’s just beyond belief now."
