Music icon Paul Spencer, famed for his role in the trio Dario G, has tragically died at the age of 53 after a brave battle with cancer. Just weeks before his untimely death, the late star shared a hopeful message on Instagram.

The celebrated DJ had sparked optimism among fans when he overcame an infection and left The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester last month. Despite his fighting spirit, today's heart-wrenching announcement confirmed that Paul lost his fight to stage four rectal cancer, one year post-diagnosis.

The electronic music scene and adoring fans have been flooding social media with tributes to the late star following the news. A heartfelt statement read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Paul Spencer earlier today.

"He was positive until the end but this was one battle he could not fight anymore. He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories for many people.

"He will be sadly missed by everyone who loved him. Shine bright our big star - K, A and H xxx #dariog." (sic)

According to BirminghamLive, in what would be his final Instagram update, Paul looked upbeat from his hospital bed as he wrote: "I'm Out Out! At last.

"Has Anything of interest happened in the outside world from the past month? I know you've been all been showing overwhelming support, love and strength for me."

"And countless others like me. I hope and pray everyone gets their best opportunity. Thank you.

"I'm infection-free now but feel I already have the energy to defeat this fully with the next stages, even though a little rest and recoup time might appreciated."

Earlier, he had entertained his well-wishers by posting videos from the hospital's entranceway in which he showcased some of his recent solo pieces.

Dario G, named in honour of the former manager of Crewe Alexandra, Dario Gradi, is famed for their 1997 hit Sunchyme, which climbed its way to number two on the UK Singles Chart.

Originally, the ensemble consisted of three disc jockeys: Scott Rosser, Stephen Spencer and Paul.

Another track that catapulted them to fame was Carnaval de Paris, a tribute to the 1998 FIFA World Cup hosted by France.
