Greg Rutherford 'can't stop shaking' as skylight explodes at home - narrowly missing kids

Greg Rutherford was left “shaken” as he took to Instagram to reveal his skylight had “exploded” while he was standing just a few steps away in the kitchen. The retired British track and field Olympic athlete filmed the aftermath of the shocking incident, explaining his children had narrowly missed being injured by the falling shards of glass.

The family’s living room was covered in glass, with the sofa and the floor around it being most severely hit. Speaking over the video, Dancing On Ice star Greg exclaimed: “One of the most terrifying experiences - one of our skylights up here just exploded - just, literally, me standing in the kitchen watching the TV on the wall, and it just went - bang! And glass went everywhere.”

Dad-of-three Greg went on to share that his eight-year-old son Milo was sitting in the living room under the skylight just minutes before it broke. He recalled: “I kid you not, two minutes before, Milo was down here doing some school work, and I said, ’it’s a nice day, go out on the deck, mate’.

“Thank God I did that, because if not, I can’t even imagine what could have happened. I have no idea if it’s the sun that’s heated it up, and it’s happened, or if something like this happens. I cannot explain to you how terrifying…” Greg added, before his voice trailed off.

He then continued to share that he could have been hit by the glass, as “I’ve been walking in and out because I’ve been trying to tidy up today, I’ve walked past this 50 times in the last half an hour”.

“I don’t know,” Greg sighed, before telling fans: “What a harrowing thing to happen.”

Greg followed the video by posting a photo to his Instagram story of the damage, focusing on the sofa, where his children had been sitting just moments before the explosion.

He wrote across the terrifying image: “Kids were sat just here before. Can’t stop shaking!”

It hasn't been the easiest year for Greg, as the star had to bow out of the Dancing On Ice final earlier this year after suffering an unfortunate injury.

Following Greg’s withdrawal from the competition, Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas and his ice skating partner Amani Fancy won the 2024 series.

Greg initially decided against disclosing the nature of his injury, but he then later revealed he “effectively gave myself a C-section”.

The athlete painfully tore his abs when he tried to skate through the legs of professional ice skater Colin Grafton.

Greg had to undergo complex abdominal surgery following the accident, and has been documenting his recovery on social media ever since.
