ITV GMB's Richard Gaisford breaks silence from hospital bed after emergency surgery
Good Morning Britain's Richard Gaisford has given an update from his hospital bed after undergoing emergency surgery over the weekend.
Good Morning Britain's Chief Correspondent Richard Gaisford, has shared that he needed an operation after getting hurt during a special report from Ukraine. Richard gave an update after posting a picture from his hospital bed, thanking the NHS for the emergency surgery he had over the weekend.
On Monday, presenter Susanna Reid told viewers that her co-worker had an infection that wasn't getting better with antibiotics. This meant he needed emergency surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
Richard, who is 51 and joined GMB in 2014, confirmed that he got injured while in Ukraine covering the second anniversary of the war starting.
He thanked everyone who sent him kind messages, saying the response was "a bit overwhelming".
Explaining what happened, Richard said: "I'm not at death's door. I got an infection in my leg in Ukraine that didn't get better with antibiotics. I asked the NHS for advice and doctors decided the best thing to do was an immediate operation to open up the infected area and clean it out.
“I have a big hole, but hopefully nothing nasty left inside. I should be back at work soon, but might not go back to the frontlines for a while."
He said: "Am still a little bemused by all the interest, but if you've suddenly discovered my feed for the first time, please take a look at our recent GMB Ukraine assignment.
“It's really important we don't forget the suffering of people there, much more so than my personal health issues."
Richard has been to Ukraine many times in the last two years. When the war began in February 2022, he had to wear a hard hat and gear while reporting live from Kyiv. This was because bomb alarms went off during his report from the capital as Russian soldiers came in.
