Nestled just north of Glossop, tucked away within the High Peak District of Derbyshire, lies a village that played a part in shaping a true British icon.

Tintwistle is a tranquil village in the Peak District that actually sits nearer to Manchester than Derby and yet, fortunately for the county, falls within its boundaries, officially cementing it as a Derbyshire destination.

Positioned right on the very fringe of the Longdendale Valley area of the Peak District, it attracts visitors from both the Midlands and the north.

While its precise location may be contested by some proud locals, it wasn't truly thrust into the spotlight until the late, great Dame Vivienne Westwood spent her formative years there.

Born in nearby Hollingworth in 1941, she relocated to the village and spent her childhood and teenage years wandering its streets, cultivating a passion for design and the world surrounding her.

The iconic designer came into the world during the height of the Second World War and led a modest life immersed in the countryside.

It wasn't until Westwood reached the age of 15 that she departed for London, where she would remain for the rest of her life, steadily carving out her place in the fashion world.

It was through creating garments for the boutique she and her former husband, Malcolm McLaren, operated, famously known as Sex, that the designer truly rose to prominence.

The shop earned quite the reputation for its provocative pieces and played a pivotal role in shaping the punk movement throughout the 1970s, bolstered by McLaren's band, the Sex Pistols. She eventually launched four shops in London, with her brand beginning to evolve and spread across Britain.

It subsequently grew into a vast global empire, with bespoke designs adorning some of the world's most influential figures and a wealth of celebrities.

Frequently, the merchandise sold would champion her favoured political causes, including the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, climate change and various other social issues.

Westwood didn't return to live in Tintwistle until after her passing at 81 in 2022. Despite spending her final days at her home in Clapham, the designer's funeral was held at Christ Church in the Derbyshire village where she grew up.

It's reported the church was adorned with 45 metres of MacLeod Harris Tweed tartan, an iconic pattern synonymous with the designer, which cost approximately £45,000.

She was subsequently laid to rest in the village, with her burial site remaining at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard.

In tribute to her life's work and the enduring legacy she left through her art, the Vivienne Westwood brand unveiled its autumn/winter collection for 23/24 entitled 'Tintwistle'. It paid homage to the designer's humble beginnings and the rural essence of her roots.

The campaign imagery was captured in and around the village to reflect the true origins of both the woman and the brand.

Adding a deeply personal touch, one of the first models to showcase the collection was none other than Westwood's granddaughter, Cora Corré.

Beyond Westwood's legacy, the village presents a picturesque destination, attracting walkers drawn to the surrounding breathtaking moorlands and peak landscape. Many choose to stop at the village pub, The Bull's Head, following a day of discovering the area's natural beauty.
