Whether it's your first cruise holiday or you are a seasoned cruiser, there are always new tips and tricks to learn that can improve your experience. Cruise expert Will Sarson, product director at Riviera Travel has almost 10 years of experience.

He says one of the biggest mistakes cruise guests make is to do with their luggage.

Furthermore, while it is commonly made by first-time cruisers, those who have been on several cruise holidays could be guilty too.

Will explained: “One of the biggest mistakes I commonly see people make on their first cruise is packing too much, mainly clothes. Some cruises last for weeks on end, so it can be easy to see why some people pack extensively."

However, passengers who overpack might regret their decision as their holiday continues.

Packing luggage

Each destination offers you up to a whole new world of trinkets and unique souvenirs, but if your suitcase is packed to the brim, you might not be able to take something home to remember the trip by.

“While it’s important to bring the essentials, I suggest not packing your entire wardrobe," said Will. "Instead, pack your favourite holiday outfits and make use of the facilities onboard."

Will added: "On many cruise liners, there’s a range of facilities available to travellers - such as laundry services.

"You also want to leave enough space to bring any purchased items home from visited ports."

Cruise companies, like airlines, also have luggage restrictions in place which determine how much baggage passengers can bring onboard. The amount of baggage you can bring onboard depends on the cruise company you are with.

Even with cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, where guests are permitted to bring as much luggage as they like onboard (within reason), they are advised to stick to the essentials. Royal Caribbean states: "For your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take."

However, passengers who are heading on a fly-cruise holiday will also need to take into account the amount of luggage permitted by the airline they are flying with.
