Locked up with hundreds of strangers in what is essentially a tin box hurtling through the sky, passengers’ nerves are already fraught on a flight.
It’s no wonder then, that certain behaviour can make people feel even more testy.
But which habits on board a plane grind travellers’ gears the most?
Online travel agency Expedia polled over 1,000 passengers to find out, and the results are in.
With an overwhelming majority of 64 per cent, having your seat kicked by the person behind reigned supreme as the most irritating act.

And that wasn’t the only thing that got on people’s nerves. Here are the 14 most annoying things you can do on a flight.
14. Single and ready to mingle
Outrageous flirters were considered annoying by 18 per cent of respondents.
13. The mad bladder
Passengers who repeatedly need to get up and go to the toilet irritated 22 per cent of people.
12. The amorous couple
Twenty two per cent also found couples becoming physically intimate a real turn off on a flight.
11. The underdressed
Passengers not wearing enough clothes was deemed wearing (pun intended) by 28 per cent of flyers. This isn’t as surprising an occurrence as you’d think – a comedian tweeted a picture of a fellow passenger stripped down to his boxers on a recent flight in America.
10. Pungent foodies
Those who bring smelly food to consume on board a flight were condemned by 30 per cent of fellow passengers.
9. The armrest hog
Taking over the armrest is bad manners according to 43 per cent of travellers.
8. Seat-back recliner
Pushing your seat back into another passenger’s space is not on, said 35 per cent of those surveyed.
7. The queue jumper
Tied with the seat recliner, queue jumpers are also abhorred by 35 per cent.
6. Chatty Cathy
A good old chinwag with a total stranger can be truly enjoyable – but not on a flight apparently. This got the thumbs down from 40 per cent of people.

5. The boozer
Fellow passengers getting sloshed on board a flight was considered undesirable by 49 per cent of people.
4. The audio insensitive
Listening to your music too loud through your headphones will apparently also annoy 49 per cent of fellow flyers.
3. The aromatic passenger
This is a rather delicate way of describing passengers who smell or are unhygienic. Over half of respondents (55 per cent) were not overly keen on these types.
2. Inattentive parents
Passengers did not blame unruly children for being annoying; rather they blamed parents who let their offspring run amok. This was deemed annoying by 59 per cent of people.
