If you’re on the hunt for a city break that won’t break the bank, then you're in luck. While London is a popular city break for British families, a weekend in the capital is extremely expensive.

Accommodation, activities and food costs are all sky high but don’t panic. You don’t have to empty your accounts for a stunning weekend break — in fact, there are plenty of beautiful places on the UK’s doorstep. Jen Carr, family travel expert and founder of The Travel Mum has shared her five favourite and affordable city breaks, perfect for families. And she says they can all work out cheaper than London.

Porto, Portugal

1. Porto, Portugal

This beautiful, compact city is laid back and great for a quick trip. Jen said: “Porto is a smaller and more laid-back city than Lisbon, making it a brilliant choice for families. Flights are often under £100 return from the UK in autumn, and the cost of living is far lower than London's”.

Hungary, Budapest, Chain Bridge and St. Stephen's basilica, elevated view

2. Budapest, Hungary

The charming city of Hungary is great for families with plenty to do. You can explore the car-free paradise of Margaret Island which has playgrounds, pedal carts and a mini zoo or take a ride on the funicular. Jen said: “Pick up a Budapest Card for unlimited transport, a river cruise and free entry to many attractions - a big money saver for families.”

Krakow

3. Kraków, Poland

Kraków offers history, charm, and affordability all rolled into one. There’s a whole host of activities for kids and  hotel rates and restaurant prices are much lower than in the UK, making it easy to enjoy without stressing about every penny. Jen’s top tip is to seek out the milk bars (bar mleczny) that serve tasty Polish treats for just a couple of pounds.

Nyhavn Waterfront, Copenhagen Denmark

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

Although this capital city has a reputation for being pricey, many families find it to be cheaper than a weekend in London. There’s plenty of free activities and autumn is a great time to visit as many of the crowds have died down.

Jen said: “Save on food costs by visiting Copenhagen’s food halls, where you can mix and match affordable dishes. Look into getting the Copenhagen card for unlimited transport and entrance to over 80 attractions. You can add kids onto the card for free.”
