Majorca has been making headlines this summer as locals took a stand against overtourism with protests engulfing the streets of the island's capital, Palma.

And it’s no wonder why, as a huge 17.8 million tourists visit the island each year, including 3.7 million Britons in 2023.

But while this may seem like discouraging news, it could also be taken as a reminder to explore similar destinations in Spain with less crowds and cheaper beers.

As part of a new study, the travel experts at eurochange have highlighted La Gomera, in the Canary Islands, as a lesser-known spot with warm weather and £1.55 beers to enjoy in the southern European country.

Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at eurochange, said: “Majorca is understandably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

“However, it may not be the safest time to visit this summer, so, to avoid fuelling the over-tourism problem over there, we wanted to share some similar holiday spots that are equally as beautiful and offer just as much historic charm.

“Destinations like Lafranc, on the Costa Brava, and La Gomera, the second smallest of Spain’s Canary Islands, have very similar climates and offer the perfect balance of relaxed beaches and incredible mountain ranges, just like Majorca, but without the crowds.”

La Gomera is known for being one of the less visited of its archipelago, despite boasting a stunning, rugged coastline with small black-sand beaches and scenic hiking routes.

Among its most popular beaches is Valle Gran Rey, which features black sand, calm waters and a family-friendly atmosphere thanks to an abundance of restaurants and bars.

Playa de Santiago, located in a fishing village, offers a mix of black sand and pebbles and is ideal for a relaxing day by the sea, with local eateries serving fresh seafood that is a must-try when on the island.

If seeking peace and quiet, Alojera beach is a tranquility haven. A remote beach on the northwest coast, it is primarily known for its natural beauty and less developed surroundings.

San Sebastián, the capital of La Gomera, with attractions like the Church of the Assumption and the Torre del Conde is a cultural and historical hub known for being Christopher Columbus’ last port of call before his journey to the New World.

Local Delicacies to be tried while visiting the island include dishes like "almogrote" (a cheese paste), "gofio" (a flour made from roasted grains), and of course the fresh catch of the day.
