This beautiful region in France has so much to offer with an option to beat the crowds being at the forefront. Burgundy, in the East of France, may not seem like the typical place for a holiday with families, but if you look past the wine and cheese tours, there is no end of adventure to be had with young children.

The stunning views make it a perfect place for activities such as biking, canoeing and rock climbing.  The Jura, which sits near Switzerland's border, is home to parcs naturel régional, which for those who don't speak French, are incredible national parks.

For younger children, a visit to the walkable city of Dijon may be best, where little ones can enjoy the fossils in the museum at Jardin de l’Arquebuse.

To see more of Burgundy, you can hire a boat for the duration of your stay. You don't need a boating license as they sail quite slowly, just a 15 minute briefing session before you can set off.

The recreational boats only reach speeds of between 6 to 8km/h, so be prepared for a relaxing ride. You're able to moor wherever you want, meaning you can see as much of Burgundy as your heart desires.

For keen fishers, you can bring your rods along with you, and make sure your dinner is really fresh. You can find out more about how to hire a boat here.

If a boat isn't for you, the next best way to get around is definitely cycling. Dijon is just over an hour's train ride from Paris, which is where we'd reccommend starting.

In two weeks, you can see all that Burgundy has to offer, and we'd say to start with the Voie des Vignes biking route, which will take you from Beaune south to Santenay. The roads are mostly flat, so you won't have to worry about too many hills.

The region has a rich history, and was once more affluent than the entirety of France. Remanants of this wealth are still present throught Burgundy, where you can find beautiful palaces and castles across the city that were built by the Dukes of Burgundy.

Dijon is where to stay if you appreciate intricate architecture. The city centre is home to Cathedral, the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Art Museum) and The Church of Notre Dame (which differs from the Cathedral of Notre Dame, that you may have heard of!)

To get to Burgundy, the closest airport is Dole-Jura, which is 50 km southeast of Dijon. You can also get a train from London St Pancras to Paris, and then transfer. Train tickets are available on thetrainline.com.
