The specialist cover provider Multitrip.com has warned tourists to take care when taking out travel insurance, or else they risk having to pay out thousands over simple mistakes on holiday.

When going on holiday, few tourists like to think that they may need to visit a hospital or have any of their belongings stolen.

However, Christian Bennett, a travel expert at Multitrip.com, noted that spending the time to find the right travel insurance policy can help to prevent a dream holiday from turning into a nightmare.

He advised: "It's really important to do your research when buying travel insurance to make sure that you put in place the right cover for you. Ask yourself if the baggage and cancellation cover is enough for what you need.

"Make sure that the activities you plan to do, such as diving, parasailing and water skiing, are included or can be added to the policy. If you're concerned about strikes and delays, include Travel Disruption cover in your policy for additional peace of mind."

According to a study of 1,000 Brits conducted by Multitrip.com, 22 percent of tourists usually buy the cheapest travel insurance policy they can find.

Whilst these policies are better than having no travel insurance at all, many cap the amount of money that tourists can claim if they experience an issue whilst away.

As a result, those who have costly medical expenses or get valuables stolen may need to contribute a sizeable figure toward covering their costs.

Christian suggested that tourists considering travelling with plenty of technology, such as cameras and smartphones, should take particular care when finding the right travel insurance policy.

He added: "Gadgets are an essential part of people's travelling kit. The value of all these gadgets can easily exceed the protection offered by most standard travel insurance providers.

"We offer additional Gadget Cover to enable customers to protect the gadgets they want to take away with them."

When researching for the best travel insurance policy, Multitrip.com suggested that holidaymakers should make sure that the cancellation limit on the policy is enough.

This figure is the amount of money that tourists will receive if they are forced to cancel their holiday due to events beyond their reasonable control.

They should also make sure that the policy they are interested in will pay out if they are affected by industrial action, IT problems and natural disasters.
