The pretty market town in northern England surrounded by beautiful beaches
This stunning town is the perfect retreat after spending hours at some of the UK's best beaches.
A pretty market town has captured the attention of hardcore travellers after they realised that it was surrounded by some of the most incredible beaches in the UK. Situated in Northumberland, it is the county’s main town thanks to its bustling market and stylish high streets.
Morpeth isn’t known just for its town centre though, as it also has sensational natural beauty round the corner. Cresswell Beach is one such wonder, with its golden sands that stretch for miles. Locals love to go on long walks and gaze out at the blustery North Sea. While the winter is a bit harsh, thousands flock to the coast in the summer.
Meanwhile, Druridge Bay is just up the coast and is described as a “haven for birdwatchers and walkers”, where everyone is able to truly appreciate the unique habitats and biodiversity on the Northumberland coast. The peaceful beach is a bit less touristy than its Cresswell counterpart, but is open to horses, cyclists and watersports when the weather is right.

One visitor from Newcastle described Druridge Bay as “a bit more off the beaten track - but one of our favourite spots on a hot day”. He recommended avoiding it on a windy day, but said that his “children and dogs love the beach, and they always end up in the sea”.
Beach fanatics are urged to set up camp in nearby Morpeth though, as it complements the rustic sea days perfectly. The town is home to some historic cobbled streets which twist and turn until they reach the markets. The town centre is steeped in incredible history and has a unique heritage and beauty.

You can pick up plenty of local produce at the farmers’ markets, including delightful fresh pies, or artisan breads, cheeses and fruit chutneys. Taking place on the first Saturday of every month, it attracts hundreds of visitors pretty much every time it is on.
Meanwhile, the colourful Carlisle Park is a must-visit attraction, where you can have a picnic next to the beautiful River Wansbeck. Here, people go for romantic rowing sessions or play tennis nearby. The park is also home to a statue of the famous Suffragette Emily Davison, who died after running in front of a horse at Epsom Races in the early 1900s.
