The enchanting city that’s one of Europe’s most walkable holiday destinations
A beautiful city in Germany, close to the French border, is one of Europe's most walkable holiday destinations.
Exploring a city on foot is one of the best ways to see its top attractions. But some cities are much more walkable than others.
Heidelberg, a beautiful city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, sits on the river Neckar. The historic city has a walkable Old Town.
A reasonably small city, Heidelberg’s size makes it easy to explore on foot, and the Old Town is the perfect place to start.
Situated on the riverbank, Heidelberg’s Altstadt is home to its university, which is Germany’s oldest and one of its most prestigious.
A tourist ‘David N’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “This lovely old town is what draws people to Heidelberg. Here you will find the historic old university, many churches, museums, restaurants, cafes and shops.”
One of the best places to explore on foot in Heidelberg is the Hauptstrasse, the city’s main shopping street.
It’s one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets and runs for 1.8km through the Old Town and dates back to the 13th century.
Tourists will find a huge range of shops and restaurants along the street as well as Heidelberg’s historic City Hall and Church of the Holy Spirit.
