Gary Lewin's World Cup ends with ecstasy then agony
ROY HODGSON has described as "heart-breaking" the moment when England physiotherapist Gary Lewin suffered a broken ankle in a freak accident in Saturday's match against Italy.
Lewin, 50, is returning home from the tournament and his deputy, Steve Kemp, will take charge of his duties.
He was injured when he leaped from the bench to celebrate Daniel Sturridge's equaliser in Manaus and landed on a water bottle, which forced him to take an awkward fall.
Hodgson said: "We will miss him. It is sad but we can cover for him. It was just an unfortunate accident with dire consequences. He is very experienced and close to the players and it was a heart-breaking moment."
