Ireland's first UFC belt holder hasn't graced the Octagon since his historic UFC 205 victory over Eddie Alvarez, a triumph which saw him become the first fighter in the promotion's history to hold two titles simultaneously.
Nearly 17 months have passed since that historic night at Madison Square Garden, and McGregor has shown little sign of returning to mixed martial arts anytime soon.
However, according to White, McGregor has informed the UFC brass that he'd like to make his long-awaited return to the cage in September.
"As soon as these guys (Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway) step in the ring and throw a punch, it’s on for the title," White told ESPN while discussing the lightweight title picture.
"And whoever wins, wins the title.
"And we’ll see what happens with Conor over the next several months.
"I know he had expressed some interest in fighting in September."

Although McGregor hasn't given any solid update on his much-anticipated return to the cage, he's said to be determined to mixed martial arts' premier promotion this year.
“We can’t really talk about when he wants to return,” 'The Notorious'' striking coach Owen Roddy recently told Express Sport.
“But he’s adamant he’s getting back.

“But for me, the sooner (he’s back) the better. The UFC is really missing Conor, I believe.
"And I think everybody is missing the whole extravaganza of a Conor McGregor fight. There’s nothing like it in the world.
“And I think the people in the world want to see it again. The sooner the better.”
