Roger Federer route to Wimbledon final: Lajovic, Coric, Cilic... then Rafael Nadal
ROGER FEDERER is going in search of his eighth Wimbledon title - and his most likely route to the final can now be revealed.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who has won eight Wimbledon times, has been drawn against Dusan Lajovic in the first round.
The pair have met once before in last year’s Wimbledon when Federer romped to a 7-6 6-3 6-2 win. The Serb is ranked 57 in the world.
If Federer wins that one he is likely to play Slovakian Lukas Lacko, the world No.94.
Lacko, 30, has a strong grass-court game and he reached the final at Eastbourne before losing to Mischa Zverev.
Then it’s a possible meeting with Ivo Karlovic, the big-serving 39-year-old giant. Karlovic, 39, is 211cm tall making him one of the tallest pros in tennis history.
Bona Coric is a possible round-four opponent and he will need no introduction to the Swiss.
Coric, 21, is one of the game’s hottest young talents and he shocked Federer to win the Halle Open in the run-up to Wimbledon.
Federer had won the previous two meetings between the pair before the defeat in Germany.
In what would be a repeat of last year’s final, Marin Cilic could be Federer’s opponent in the semis.
Cilic has reached the finals of two of the last four Grand Slams - at Australia and at Wimbledon last year.
Both of those have come against Federer with the Swiss coming out on top on both games.
And in the final Federer could meet either Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic has won Wimbledon three times and is showing signs of returning to his best form following elbow surgery. The Serb has had success on grass having reached the final at Queen’s.
Nadal and Federer haven’t met on grass since 2008 when the latter came out on top in one of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever.
