Federer has not played a competative match since March after sitting out the clay-court season.
After suffering a shock Miami Open defeat to Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, Federer confirmed he would sit out the French Open for a second year in a row.
“I decided not to play the clay season,” he said.
“I am trying to figure things out now, I have some time. I’m a positive thinker, every match is another opportunity.
“You take a break, get away from it all, and get back to practice court and work.”
But ahead of his return for the grass season, Federer took to the practice courts on Sunday afternoon in preparation for the Stuttgart Open.
And the former world No 1 looked comfortable as he played some easy rallies with Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Federer’s return to action will be in a second round match against Mischa Zverev or a qualifier.
The Swiss ace was seen playing in Nike gear as reports surfaced he could be making a shock switch to Japanese brand Uniqlo.
It’s understood Federer is on the brink of signing a deal worth $30million (£22.3m) a year.
