Garbine Muguruza makes shock Simona Halep claim after French Open win over Maria Sharapova
GARBINE MUGURUZA has revealed she’s given the No 1 ranking no thought ahead of her French Open showdown against Simona Halep.
Muguruza demolished Maria Sharapova in straight sets yesterday to set up a semi-final showdown against Halep, who is the current world No 1.
Whoever wins the match would take their place at the summit of women’s tennis.
While Halep has yet to get her hands on a Grand Slam title, Muguruza has two to her name and she triumphed at Roland Garros in 2016.
Although there’s a lot riding on the last four clash, Muguruza isn’t paying much attention to the ramifications it will have on rankings.
I don't give it too much attention. Every week a list comes out
“Well, I heard about it just now that the one who wins will be No 1,” she said.
“But I don't give it too much attention. Every week a list comes out.
“In the past few years, I used to take this into account, and I shouldn't have taken it so much to heart.
“So now I don't have it in mind constantly.
“If I make it all, it's very well. Otherwise, there will be more opportunities.”
Muguruza also dismissed the idea she is favourite against Halep, adding: “No, I don't feel I'm favorite for this match, because she's played better than I have this year.
“She loves clay. She loves Roland Garros. She's shown it.
“It's a great match. It's a great semifinals. I'm motivated, and that's it. That's all.”
