French Open 2018: Kyle Edmund injured? Brit requests medical treatment in Fognini clash
FRENCH OPEN 2018 – Kyle Edmund summoned his trainer onto the court during the second set of today’s last-32 clash against Italian Fabio Fognini after appearing to suffer a side strain.
The British number one dropped the opening set to the No 18 seed 6-3 but battled back in the second to even the scores with a 6-4 set.
However, the 23-year-old looked uncomfortable during the closing moments of the second, clutching his hip while looking up at his coach.
“Edmund calls on the trainer, indicating something isn't right when he is twisting right into his favoured forehand,” said BBC Sport reporter Jonathan Jurejko.
“He has his left hip and ankle tended to before lying out on a white physio mat next to the chair.
“Edmund has the trainer out - looks like they're testing the hip.”
Thankfully, Edmund appeared to brush off the injury, going on to secure the third set 6-3 to remain in the driver’s seat for a place in the last 16 of the competition.
Novak Djokovic booked his place in the next round of the competition with a four-set win over Bautista Agut yesterday, celebrating his victory by posting a cheeky dance routine on his Twitter account.
But it was not all smiles for the Serbian, who is likely to be punished by tournament organisers after a frustrated outburst on the court during which he smashed his racquet to pieces.
Djokovic will play Spaniard Fernando Verdasco tomorrow.
World No 3 Alexander Zverev is also through the last-16 where a showdown against Russia’s Karen Khachanov awaits, while Dominic Thiem plays Kei Nishikori in the other confirmed clash tomorrow.
