The Australian sent shockwaves throughout the tournament by knocking Federer out at the second round stage - a result which also stripped him of his world No 1 title.
However, Kokkinakis has explained how he was able to beat a player who a week previous was on a 17-match unbeaten run.
The 21-year-old revealed that Federer has occasionally called him up to his Dubai training camp before big tournaments.
And by using the experience of playing him in the Middle East, Kokkinakis was able to give himself “a legitimate shot" at beating the Swiss star in their first ever competitive meeting.

Maybe Dubai helped a little bit to know what he likes to do
"Maybe Dubai helped a little bit to know what he likes to do," said Kokkinakis, who added that he was "all ears" when Federer offered advice.
"In practice, I feel really good with a lot of the players.
“Again, there's obviously that difficulty trying to bring that to a match court.
“I know if I bring that level, I can beat a lot of good players.
Federer has revealed he will sit out of the clay court season
“That's what I tried to do.
"I mean, everyone is human. He just plays tennis a lot better than a lot of people."
Federer will perhaps now think twice about who he next allows to come and train with him.
