Nadal was forced to retire from his Australian Open quarter-final clash against Marin Cilic due to a leg injury.
The Spanish star was trailing 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 2-0 when he pulled out, handing Cilic a semi-final berth against Kyle Edmund.
Nadal called for a trainer early in the fourth set and required three minutes of treatment before attempting to continue.
The world No 1 took a pain-relief tablet and came back onto the court but appeared to be in severe discomfort and was forced off permanently shortly after.
