JOHANNA KONTA is safely through to the second round of the Australian Open.

The world number nine, who reached the semi-finals of the tournament last year, won in straight sets against Kirsten Flipkens- 7-5, 6-2.
Konta came into the first round on the back of her win at the Sydney International last week.
After some aggressive tennis, she earned a break in the seventh game of the first set.

Flipkens dug in deep but Konta closed out the opener 7-5.
Konta was proving adept on both wings and her backhand fired at the start of the second.
And the Brit wrapped up the match after one hour and 36 minutes with a big serve.

Speaking after her victory, Konta said: “It was incredibly tricky, she has the kind of game that can make anyone uncomfortable out there.
"I knew I would have to stay patient and really play myself into the match.
"I definitely love playing here in front of this crowd on these beautiful courts. A lot has happened in the last year but I'm enjoying playing every day."
