Andy Murray returns a backhand during his win over Marcel Granollers
The world number two, who guided Britain to victory over Japan in last week’s Davis Cup clash prevailed in straight sets - 6-4, 7-6.
Murray had beaten Granollers in six of their previous eight encounters.
But after going 3-1 down in the first set courtesy of a double fault, Murray fought back to clinch the opener.
Granollers kept at the task in the second, and forced it into a tie-breaker.
Murray produced some delightful winners and eventually won it 7-3.
He will now face Argentina’s Federico Delbonis in the third round.
