Gasquet - who has never won a Grand Slam title - and Wawrinka gave the No. 1 Court crowd a thrill.
The Frenchman triumphed in the battle of the beautiful backhands by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 9-11.
Gasquet managed to overcome Wawrinka - and his own poor grip - and hailed the victory as one of his best ever.
"It was very tough, I got frustrated that I could not finish," the 29-year-old said.

"I tried to fight and keep my serve and the last game was incredible.
"I really wanted to win today, it's a great match for me and it would have been disappointing to lose.
On his lose handling of his racket, Gasquet added: "I'm sweating a lot and maybe its a bit of superstition.
Gasquet will now face world No 1 Djokovic who beat US Open champion Marin Cilic in straight sets earlier today on Centre Court.
"He will be the favourite," Gasquet said. "But I will try to play the same again. I lost to him in Paris and he is the best player on grass but I will try my best."
