Serena Williams safely negotiates her passage into third round
SERENA WILLIAMS has made it through to the third round after coasting to a straight sets victory over Caroline Garcia.
The top seed was barely pushed by her opponent as she ran out a 6-3, 6-2 winner.
The 31-year-old American looked hungry and was keen to put the match to bed early. After an impressive break to love, Williams opened up a 4-2 lead in the opening set.
Winners continued to fire off the Williams racquet and the opening set statistics told the story of her domination- she served up six aces and won an astonishing 87% of points on her first serve.
Garcia was backed into a corner, and though she tried to break up Williams' rhythm, Williams' took her unbeaten run to an incredible 33 matches.
Williams was pleased with her win, and said during her post-match interview: "It was a really good win, Caroline is a really good player - it was a good win today.
"She's incredibly promising and her serve is amazing and I knew it would be a good match. I really love these moments when I am out here and I live and die for each match."
The 16-times grand slam winner will contest Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm in the next round.
