Andy Murray soars to No2
ANDY MURRAY drove himself to the point of exhaustion last night to win a dramatic Sony Open final in Miami and become the new world No2.
He outlasted David Ferrer of Spain to win 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and 45 minutes in the heat and humidity of a furnace-like Florida afternoon.
At the end, Murray could barely move, gasping for breath, while Ferrer three times called upon the trainer to treat cramp problems that saw him collapse to the ground.
Murray said: “It was brutal out there and we both struggled physically but the support I got kept me going. Two years ago I’d have lost a match like that.”
Murray served for the match at 5-4 in the deciding set but was broken. He then went on to save a match point at 6-5 down before clinching victory in the tiebreak.
