Shelton opens up on practice struggles

Ben Shelton has revealed that he finds it hard to get other players to practice with him because he is left-handed.

"You can't get a practice partner, it's impossible," said the American in a press conference.

"Except for when the draw comes out and they play [Jack] Draper, Shapo [Denis Shapovalov], or Ugo Humbert. Then I get the look.

"Other than that, people don't want to practice with you as much. For me, I don't mind.

"I hit with a righty, lefty, tall guy, short guy, serve bot, grinder. Doesn't really matter.

"Guys on tour, players or coaches, are particular about who they practise with. Big serve, lefty, that's two strikes against you. Finding hits can be difficult."

Kokkinakis set to undergo surgery

Thanasi Kokkinakis has revealed that he will almost certainly need surgery on the pectoral injury which has been troubling him in Melbourne.

Speaking after his doubles match with Nick Kyrgios, he said: "The doctor advised me not to play and I'm going to need to do a serious procedure now, probably.

"I've got to speak to as many experts as I can, but I can't serve, I can't hit a high forehand and I'm in a lot of pain.

"I wanted to come out here. I wanted to see if I was somewhat competitive, even without a serve. I just wanted to get on court again with the big fella.

"Such great memories and we had a big crowd, we knew, waiting for us. Any other event, any other circumstance, I'm not stepping foot on court."

Collins thanks 'super drunk' booing fans

Danielle Collins has thanked the fans who booed during her win over Destanee Aiava for spurring her on to victory.

"I love playing in a crowd that has energy, regardless of what side they’re on," said Collins.

"It just motivates me even more, so it’s kind of a good thing, especially when I’m not playing that well.

"I think there were a lot of people that were super drunk and had a hard time controlling themselves and were really excited."

Raducanu backed to upset Swiatek on one condition

John McEnroe believes Emma Raducanu will have a chance of beating Iga Swiatek as long as she is 'feeling right'.

He told Eurosport: "She called the trainer a couple of times on the court during the second set against [Amanda] Anisimova.

"It looked kind of iffy what was going to happen. I don’t know if that threw Anisimova off, but it worked.

"She looked like she was moving better, but obviously that will be a problem against Iga.

"To me, when you play a top player like Iga who’s not as comfortable on hard courts as she is on clay, it’s a good time to play her, when she’s not quite sure of herself.

"Radacanu’s making progress but it’ll be a tall order. If she’s feeling right, she’ll have a shot at it. It’s good to see her back in the mix."

Sinner confirms split with coach Cahill

Jannik Sinner has confirmed that he will part ways with his coach Darren Cahill at the end of the season.

After beating Tristan Schoolkate in the second round, he said: "It will be Darren's last season as my coach."

Cahill joined Sinner's team in 2022 and has formed a successful partnership with the two-time Grand Slam champion.

He is expected to step back from the full-time tennis circuit next year.

Medvedev out as Tien pulls off major upset

Daniil Medvedev is out of the Australian Open after losing to teenage qualifier Learner Tien in the biggest upset of the tournament so far.

The 28-year-old went into the contest as the overwhelming favourite to win but ended up on the receiving end of a 6-3 7-6 6-7 1-6 7-6 defeat.

Tien wrapped up the first two sets before a frustrated Medvedev eventually found his rhythm to force a decider.

A tiebreaker was eventually needed to separate the two players, with Tien prevailing to book his place in the third round.

The match went on for nearly five hours and did not finish until just before 3:00am local time.

Sinner speaks about defending title

Jannik Sinner was asked about the pressures of defending the Australian Open title after booking his place in the third-round. The Italian won the event for the first time last year after beating Daniil Medvedev in the final.

“It’s definitely a different feeling but there are so many beautiful moments on and off the court that have happened to me here in this beautiful place,” Sinner said.

“It’s different but I take it as a chance to hopefully do it again - there’s still a very long way to go, we go day by day.

“From today we know my level can improve, which is the most important. Hopefully I can show this in the next round and hopefully again it’s going to be a great tournament for me.”

Australian Open star refuses to give away towel

Alex Michelsen had to repeatedly inform members of the Australian Open crowd that he would not be handing over his match-used towel, as other players have done after their encounters.

The American had not done himself any favours with the Melbourne crowd already, having knocked out one of their home stars in James McCabe.

As Michelsen was packing up his equipment, a couple of young fans were calling out to be given their own memento and spotted his towel, asking if he could throw it to them.

However, Michelsen stood firm and insisted that he could not give it away as his mum had already asked for it. “My mum wants one - I have to keep it,” an apologetic Michelsen said. “My mum wants one.”

Skupski and Salisbury progress

British doubles stars Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury have progressed to the second-round of the Australian Open after defeating Argentine pair Francisco Comesana and Sebastian Baez.

The 10th seeds were pushed all the way by their opponents but eventually clinched the match 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.

Medvedev throws tennis racket

Daniil Medvedev threw his tennis racket along the floor and into the advertising hoardings in a second meltdown this week at the Australian Open.

Last year's finalist found himself in a tricky spot, a set down to Learner Tien. While trailing in the second to the 19-year-old American, Medvedev's frustrations got the better of him and nearby fans got a scare when his racket soon came hurling towards them.

World No.11 booed by crowd

World No. 11 Danielle Collins was booed at the end of her showdown with Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava after taunting the crowd.

Collins mouthed at the crowd, smiled and nodded her head as she cupped her ear. She even took the opportunity to sarcastically blow them a kiss.

The Australian Open crowd had been cheering for home star Aiava, who reached the second-round after coming through three qualifying matches and seeing off Greet Minnen in her opening match.

Collins won the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Sinner through after scare

World No.1 Jannik Sinner is through to the third-round of the Australian Open but was forced to come from a set down against home star Tristan Schoolkate.

The Italian lost the opening set 6-4 but eased through the next three sets to book a third-round showdown with American Marcos Giron.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis end match early

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis brought their first-round Australian Open doubles match to an end early as they handed the victory to opponents Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth midway through the second set.

Vukic and Duckworth landed the opening set 7-5 and were 3-2 up in the second when the 2022 champions walked to the net to shake hands.

The retirement may have been due to the fact Kokkinakis had been struggling with an injury ahead of the match.

It could be the last time we see Kyrgios at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old lost in the first-round of the singles and his future in tennis is up in the air.

Raducanu apologises to Murray

Emma Raducanu has revealed she has apologised and made peace with Andy Murray after ruining the Scot’s planned final farewell at Wimbledon.

And the rapprochement opens up the chance of Murray - who is coaching Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open - working with Raducanu in future. “I just hope he doesn't hate me too much!” she laughed.

The 2021 US Open champion upset the three-time Grand Slam winner with her late withdrawal from the mixed doubles after Murray had lost in the doubles.

Raducanu cited a sore wrist before her singles match the following day.

Speaking after reaching the third round of the Australian Open for the first time, Raducanu said: “Afterwards I sent him a long message basically [saying]: ‘If I caused any trouble I guess at Wimbledon, that's definitely the last thing I want’.

"He's someone that I've grown up looking up to and I don't want any bad blood or harsh feelings with him. I sent him a long message and he took it really well and responded saying he was disappointed but he understood. We're fine now."

Kyrgios back in action

Nick Kyrgios is back in action at the John Cain Arena for a doubles showdown.

The 29-year-old has once again teamed up with his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis, with the duo taking on Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth in an all-Australian affair. And the match is underway.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis teamed up for the Australian Open doubles in 2022 and incredibly won the title after defeating Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the showpiece match.

Frances Tiafoe rages and hurls bottles

Frances Tiafoe threw several water bottles onto the court in the fifth set of his defeat to Fabian Marozsan.

Having wasted a host of chances in the fourth to break, Tiafoe went down 3-0 and as he walked over to his chair, flung his bottles which landed on the court.

He was subsequently handed a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Gael Monfils ready to retire

Gael Monfils admitted that he "can finish now" and teased an imminent retirement at the Australian Open.

The 38-year-old Frenchman is into the third round after victory over Daniel Altmaier, but isn't waiting for another specific achievement before hanging up his racket.

“No, I can finish now," Monfils said in his press conference. "I think I have done what I want in a way. If I do more, it's bonus. I'm happy.

"As I always say from day one, for me the most important is the health. It's just a part of my life. It's very nice, beautiful. Tennis gave me everything, you know, I can even imagine, so I am already blessed. The rest is bonus.”

Ons Jabeur struggles to breathe during match

Ons Jabeur revealed that she was struggling to breathe as she overcame Colombian Maria Camila Osorio 7-5, 6-3.

The Tunisian star needed to take a medical time out after an asthma attack in the Melbourne heat, adjusting her playstyle as a result.

“It ws very, very tough to breathe," she said. "When I was younger, I was diagnosed with asthma. It is very tough to play. I had to kind of not play long rallies.

"I know I was playing Camila today. Not the best opponent when you are in this condition, but I apologized at the end of the match, because I really don't want behave like this on the court. I used the inhaler when I took the medical timeout. It didn't really help.

"So I was with the doctor, and let's see. We're going to do some more tests and see what's going on. To be honest with you, if I lost the first set, it would have been very difficult to continue.”

Taylor Fritz gives away prize money

Taylor Fritz has pledged to donate the entirety of his first-round winnings at the Australian Open to help Los Angeles fire relief efforts.

Fritz, a California native, went through to the third round after a comfortable win over Cristian Garin.

Speaking on court after the victory, Fritz said: “I just want everyone to stay safe. It’s just insane what happened. I wanted to say something after my first-round match but I’m going to be donating my first-round prize money to LA wildfire relief funds.

“It’s really the least I could do. Southern California’s my home and LA was my home for a very long time so I’m just doing what I can do to help. I would encourage anyone else who can donate to help too because a lot of people really need help."

Emma Raducanu into the third round

Emma Raducanu has reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.

She defeated close friend Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5, having overcome injury issues in the second set.

The British No. 2 needed a medical time out after suffering a back spasm before Christmas, but rallied to close out the win.

And she has been rewarded with a blockbuster tie against none other than Iga Swiatek.

Nick Kyrgios match in doubt

Nick Kyrgios' potential final Australian Open match may not go ahead this morning.

The Aussie admitted that he had played his final singles game at the Slam after losing to Brit Jacob Fearnley.

He is scheduled to play doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis today against Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth.

But Kokkinakis shared some worrying injury problems of his own that has prompted many to wonder whether the match will go ahead at all.

Iga Swiatek loudly booed

Iga Swiatek typically dropped just two games as she defeated Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2, booking a place against Emma Raducanu.

But the Pole was loudly jeered by the Melbourne crowd in her post-match interview, having said that the coffee in Sydney was better than where she currently was.

When asked about the famed Melbourne coffee, she replied: “I’ve got to say… in Sydney I found better coffee shops.”

And the home crowd did not take too kindly to that comment...
