Jannik Sinner is the new US Open champion after defeating American star Taylor Fritz in straight sets at Flushing Meadows. The world No. 1 has capped off an impressive year, taking both hardcourt Grand Slams following his Australian Open win at the beginning of the season.

Sinner defeated Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in what ended up becoming a comfortable victory, having gotten the better of British star Jack Draper in the semi-finals.

Fritz was the first American finalist at the US Open in 18 years, but the home crowd have been forced to wait even further for their first winner since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the two leaders of tennis' new generation, have shared the 2024 Grand Slams with Alcaraz taking French Open and Wimbledon titles, laying down a marker to the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Aryna Sabalenka also beat American Jessica Pegula in the women's final on Saturday night, ensuring that both male and female winners of the Australian Open also won the US Open this year.

Draper backed to challenge at every Grand Slam

Martina Navratilova believes Jack Draper will be a force to be reckoned with at all four Grand Slam events next year.

Reflecting on his semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner at the US Open, Navratilova said: "The drop shots were shorter. Everything was better.

"It's cumulative on this court when it's so physical, but it just caught up with him. Next year, if he stays healthy, Jack will be in the conversation in every major.

"That's a really big plus. If he keeps playing like this, the sky is the limit."

Tennis icon offers Djokovic verdict

Tennis legend Lindsay Davenport is 'happy' about Novak Djokovic being dumped out of the US Open early as it will allow him some much-needed rest.

"I'm surprised he lost so early, but in a strange way, I'm happy for him," she told Serbian website Sportklub.

"After everything he's done, it hasn't been easy for him to play another major tournament since mid-May. I really want him to rest well and play the way he wants to for the rest of the season.

"We always forget that Novak is 37 and has been on tour for 20 years. He knows and feels it. He needs time to enjoy himself, celebrate and then get ready for Australia.

"I think next year he'll be able to win two or three Grand Slams."

McEnroe picks Williams over Sabalenka

John McEnroe believes Aryna Sabalenka would lose to Serena Williams if they faced each other in their respective primes.

He said: "Those are two of the biggest hitters that ever played in the women’s game.

"I think Sabalenka has really improved her movement, but I don’t think, both at their best, that she is as athletic as Serena. But she is getting closer.

"I have a lot of respect for her because she has really maximised what she can do on the court and that’s why she is finally winning majors and contending in almost every event she is in."

Murray opens up on life after tennis

Andy Murray is surprised at how much he is enjoying his retirement after quitting tennis earlier this summer.

He told BBC Radio 4: "Since I've stopped, I feel really free and have got lots of time to do whatever it is I want.

"I can dedicate time to my children and have free time to play golf or go to the gym on my own terms. It is really nice and I didn't expect that.

"I was expecting to find retirement hard and be missing tennis a lot and wanting to get back on the tennis court on tour.

"So far it has been the complete opposite to what I was thinking."

Azarenka snubs Swiatek with 'best player' verdict

Victoria Azarenka believes Aryna Sabalenka, not Iga Swiatek, is currently the best female player in the world.

Taking to social media following Sabalenka's triumph at the US Open, she wrote: "Amazing win. Congratulations. Best player in the world this season!"

Swiatek won the French Open and four of the eight WTA 1000 tournaments played, while Sabalenka claimed one WTA 1000 title and two Grand Slam triumphs.

Kyrgios makes snide Sinner remark

Nick Kyrgios chimed into a discussion with Piers Morgan with a snide remark after Jannik Sinner's victory in the US Open final.

Morgan shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, celebrating Sinner's triumph alongside the caption: "After failing TWO drugs tests. (Fixed it for you)."

Kyrgios, who has been critical of Sinner throughout the tournament, sarcastically added: "First time in history! We are witnessing greatness!"

Sinner opens up on doping controversy

Jannik Sinner has admitted the controversy over his two failed drugs tests 'was and is still on my mind'.

His path to victory at the US Open was accompanied by questions over the affair which saw him submit two positive tests for clostebol, a banned substance, in March.

He was spared punishment after it was concluded that he was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

"It was and it's still on my mind," said Sinner. "It's not that it's gone, but when I'm on court, I try to focus about the game.

"I try to handle the situation the best possible way, communication with the team, in the practice courts.

"It was not easy, that's for sure, but I tried to stay focused, with which I guess I've done a great job."

Fritz makes Djokovic comment

After losing to Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz spoke about Novak Djokovic's early exit and how it helped him to reach the final.

"I would have had to play a really really great match if I'd have happened to play Novak somewhere else in the draw," said the American.

"But like I said, you can find yourself a little deeper in the draws like quarter-finals and stuff if you play solid tennis.

"I still think that to beat the top guys, you need to bring your best game."

Which win is harder?

Jannik Sinner was asked how his US Open win compares to victory in the Australian Open.

He said: "I believe that you can't really compare them, because it's different circumstances, different times of the year.

"I believe that in Melbourne was a kind of a relief, you know, because in my mind, you know, it was like I was working for it, and you never know if you can win one Grand Slam or not, but when you win one, you know that you can do it potentially.

"Here was difficult because also the pretournament circumstances weren't easy. I felt like that I have grown, you know, match by match and that my confidence level went higher and higher at some point.

"It was different because I had more, maybe a bit more pressure this time than in Australia. I'm happy how I handled this one. Yeah, I'm just excited to have this trophy with me."

Sinner's extended reaction

Jannik Sinner has given more reaction to his US Open win in his press conference.

And the Italian warned he is only going to get better. “Today we saw that not everything was perfect,” he said “I could have served slightly better, but this makes me realise that the work never stops.

"It's always a continuous work which, at the end of the day, if you want to be a better player you always have to work, and you have to have these daily routines, accept difficult times on court. The work never stops. How can you play better against certain opponents,? How do you work on such shots?

“I was a lot in the gym, because I knew physically I still had to improve and I still have to improve a lot. This is all part of the sacrifices you make for an eventual future. So we will keep working.

"I know that I'm not perfect and I will never be perfect, but we always try to evolve in my game. Then after my career I can say: ‘Okay, I've done everything possible to be at 100%’.”

Fritz's heartbreaking admission

Taylor Fritz has admitted he feels like he "let a lot of people down" after his heartbreaking US Open final defeat.

Asked in his press conference if he can call his US Open a success, American No.1 Fritz said: "Not yet. There's obviously a lot of positives, and when I get some time to cool down, then I'll be happy about the fact that I made it to the finals and stuff like that.

"But right now I'm pretty just disappointed in how, like, just a lot of things on the court, how I played, how I hit certain shots. It sucks.

"And I'm not saying that it necessarily would have made a difference. I don't know if it would have, but I just would have liked to have played better and given myself a better chance.

"It's really disappointing right now. I feel like the American fans have been wanting a men's champion for a long time, and I just, I don't know, I'm pretty upset with how I played. I feel like, I don't know, I feel like I almost let a lot of people down."

Sinner to party after US Open win

Jannik Sinner revealed that he will celebrate long into the night after his first US Open win.

The Italian acknowledged that the Asian leg of the season was coming up and his "work never stops", but for at least one night he will party.

He told Sky Sports: "Yes, yes (I will celebrate) especially after the tough moments, it's going to be a great night for me and my team and the people who are close to me.

"Some time off after is deserved and then obviously China is coming so hopefully be ready for there, but it means a lot to me."

Fritz apologises to US Open crowd

Taylor Fritz apologised to the US Open crowd after he was unable to be the first American male since Andy Roddick in 2003 to lift the Grand Slam title.

Fritz lost in straight sets, but no American man has reached that stage in 18 years and the crowd was sure to give him a deserved reception for his achievement.

"It's been an amazing two weeks and first off congrats to Jannik (Sinner)," Fritz said. "He played a great match. Congrats to his team. It's really impressive. He was too good, it's amazing.

"Being an American at the US Open is just incredible, feeling the love all week. Thank you so much.

"I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time so I'm sorry I couldn't get it done this time but I'm going to keep working and hopefully I'll get it done next time so thank you."

Sinner dedicates US Open title to his unwell aunt

Jannik Sinner made a heartbreaking admission that his aunt was unwell after winning the US Open, saying: "I don’t know how much I still have her in my life."

The world No. 1 has had to deal with plenty of behind-the-scenes issues during his time in New York, which he put aside to defeat Taylor Fritz in straight sets.

And before lifting his title, Sinner sent a touching message to his aunt and shared his hope that everyone watching has good health.

"I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt because she is really not feeling well health-wise, I don’t know how much I still have her in my life," Sinner said.

"It’s so nice that I can share positive moments still with her. She was a very important person for my life and she still is. So if that would be the biggest wish, I would wish everyone the best health to everyone but unfortunately it’s not possible."

Sinner wins US Open in straight sets

Jannik Sinner is the new US Open champion, claiming the title for the first time in his career, his second Grand Slam of the year after his Australian Open victory.

Sinner defeated home favourite Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in a comfortable win, despite impressive spells from his American opponent.

Fritz had a big chance to take the third set, serving while at 5-4, but was broken back by the world No. 1 who proved to those at Arthur Ashe exactly why he is the face of the new generation with Carlos Alcaraz.

All four Majors in 2024 have been won by Sinner and Alcaraz, two apiece, laying down a marker that the era of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray is well and truly over.

Sinner doubles lead and in complete control

Jannik Sinner has cruised through the second set, taking it away from Taylor Fritz after the American appeared to have stemmed the bleeding.

Sinner did not lose a single point on his first serve and made just one unforced error to win 6-4.

Fritz raised his game, improving his ballstriking and serve, but Sinner went one further and is now just one more set away from his first US Open title.

An even set soon turned into a statement win for Sinner and Fritz now has a mountain to climb if he wants to be the first American winner of this Major since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Sinner takes first set against Fritz

The first set of the US Open men's singles final has gone to Jannik Sinner, after an early scare against the home favourite Taylor Fritz.

Both players broke each other early and the American led 3-2, but the world No. 1 powered away to win the next four games to get himself on the board in New York.

Sinner has already defeated three Americans over the past two weeks, and he is two sets away from a fourth going by the wayside en route to a first US Open title.

Sinner broke Fritz's serve three times and although not at his best, the Italian did enough to claim the opening set 6-3.

US Open men's singles final underway

Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz are out and we are underway in the final Grand Slam of the year.

Can Sinner claim his second Major of the year after success in Australia or will Fritz send his home crowd into raptures with a first Slam for the American? Only time will tell.

Draper injury worry before Davis Cup

But Draper is a doubt for the first clash against Finland after admitting that he was "banged up" following defeat to Jannik Sinner at Flushing Meadows.

Sabalenka tipped for two more successes

18-time Major winner Chris Evert has backed Aryna Sabalenka to follow up her US Open title with two more major accolades.

The Belarusian went one further than her runner-up disappointment last year by defeating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5, and Evert believes that she can become world No. 1 and win a first Wimbledon title.

"Sabalenka played the big points better," she said. "She is such a beautiful, wonderful athlete. It is not just power. It is her flexibility and tolerance.

"I am looking at Wimbledon. With that serve and return - are you kidding? She has got the game to win there. I think she will get that No.1 ranking soon.”

Nadal lifts trophy on US Open final weekend

Rafael Nadal may not have competed at the US Open this year, but on the weekend of the two finals, he has lifted a trophy.

Fritz given ammunition in Sinner battle

Taylor Fritz has been informed that Jannik Sinner "looked beatable" in his semi-final with Jack Draper and the American has a fighting chance at beating the odds.

Sinner is the overwhelming favourite to beat the home star on Arthur Ashe tonight, but Nick Kyrgios believes that Fritz can claim his first Grand Slam title.

"(Fritz) needs to have one of his best serving days," Kyrgios wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

"(Sinner) will be looking to be aggressive and dictate play whenever he can to try and move the big American around, especially after five sets with foe (Frances Tiafoe). Fritz needs to win (a) high percentage of Sinner's second serve chances."

But a runners-up cheque of £1.4m isn't a bad consolation prize.

Sinner planned to make Draper sick

Former Italian tennis player Simone Vagnozzi claims Jannik Sinner targeted Jack Draper's fitness levels.

"At the beginning there was a bit of tension, especially in the first two sets, they made mistakes that they usually don't make," he said.

"We expected a match like that, with long rallies, sometimes Jannik hesitated but he knew that Draper struggles in the long run. Making him play a few more balls and tiring him out was part of the tactical plan."

Earlier start time

A reminder that tonight's men's final between Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz will have an earlier start time than usual.

The pair are due to get their clash underway at 7pm BST - two hours earlier than previous years.

Pegula annoyed

Jessica Pegula was annoyed in the immediate aftermath of her defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final.

"Everyone is like, `Congrats! Amazing tournament!´ I´m like, 'Eh, whatever'," said Pegula. "I think maybe once I decompress a little bit, I´m sure I will be a little bit more appreciative and see all of that.

"For sure, I will take a lot of confidence from this - in maybe like a hour or two -- because ... I'm kind of annoyed. Not even annoyed losing the tournament; it´s more just I was looking at it at, like, I just wanted to win the match.

"Now there's things that are just in my head that I feel I should have done better and stuff like that. But I think that will pass in a little bit."

Draper in contention for every major

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova believes Jack Draper will be challenging for the title at every Grand Slam event next year.

Djokovic 'cheated age'

Coco Gauff's coach Brad Gilbert has backed Novak Djokovic to challenge for Grand Slam titles over the next two years, despite firing a blank at Majors this year.

"Why not?! No one cheated the age, except maybe him. He’s certainly not happy with how it went here, but I’m sure he’ll be back, he always does," Gilbert said.

"If you had told me that he wouldn’t win any Grand Slam titles this year, I would have been shocked. I thought he would win two, maybe even more."

Victoria Azarenka has labeled Aryna Sabalenka the best player in the world this year - despite the Belarusian trailing Iga Swiatek in the live rankings.

Serena above Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka has drawn comparisons with Serena Williams for her powerful play.

But John McEnroe does not think the Belarusian is on the same level as his fellow American.

“Sabalenka has improved her movement, but I don’t think that she is at the same level as Serena when she was at her best,” said McEnroe.

“Obviously, we are talking about two of the biggest hitters that have ever been in the women’s game, but I would take Serena to beat her still.

“I have a huge amount of respect for Sabalenka. She has improved her game and that is why she is finally winning majors and contending in every event she is in.”

Doing it for Dad

Aryna Sabalenka has explained the heartwarming reason why her success is so special - because she wants to do her Dad's name proud.

She said: "Well, you know, after I lost my father, it's always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis.

"Every time I see my name on that trophy, I'm so proud of myself, I'm proud of my family that they never gave up on my dream and that they were doing everything they could to keep me going.

"So I had this opportunity in life. So it really means a lot. Yeah, it's been always my dream. I still kind of cannot believe that I was able to achieve, like me with my team, we were able to achieve so much already."

Sabalenka shares turning point

Aryna Sabalenka has shared the turning point in her US Open final win over Jessica Pegula.

"Well, yeah, it was very difficult match," she said in her post-match press conference. "She played really incredible tennis.

"Honestly, after me leading 3-Love I didn't really expect her to come back with such a high level. I'm really glad that I was able to hold my serve in that 5-3 down.

"Then to break her back, it gave me so much belief that I can close this match in two sets. So very difficult match, and super happy with the win."

Pegula's reaction

Jessica Pegula has shared her thoughts after losing the US Open final. Speaking in her press conference, she said: "Yeah, super-tough match today. Obviously I would love to be in a third set right now, but I guess relatively speaking, happy that I was able to at least get my chances to win a set, considering I was down in the first and in the second.

"So was able to find some good tennis. Just wasn't quite able to sustain it. Yeah, congrats to her. I think she played some big tennis in some big moments."

Asked if she'd had chance to take in her achievement, she replied: "Probably not, because I'm just annoyed I lost right now. Everyone is like, Congrats, amazing tournament. I'm like, Eh, whatever. (Laughter.)

"I think maybe once I decompress a little bit, I'm sure I will be a little bit more appreciative and see all of that. At some point. I should probably do that at some point.

"Yeah, it's been kind of a crazy couple of days, so hopefully I'll get some time after this to kind of just relax and just, you know, look back at what I've been able to do the last month."

Sabalenka has fans in stitches

Aryna Sabalenka had the US Open fans in stitches with her response after Pegula joked that she wished Sabalenka would have given her at least one set.

"In that second set honestly I was just praying there. I was literally standing there, praying for getting this win and you’re talking about 'giving me one set,'" the Belarusian laughed.

She said: "Yeah, I think I'm going back to school on Tuesday. I'm flying back tomorrow and then going back to school.

Sabalenka is a set away from the title!

Aryna Sabalenka won a dramatic first set 7-5 against Jessica Pegula in the final.

"I think obviously it's a big occasion for me. I definitely felt, even though I generally feel pretty relaxed and stuff, I definitely felt more excited today, a few more nerves around.

“I'm definitely someone who is, I think, quite an anxious human being. I think when you add all that together sometimes I do feel a bit nausea on court, and I do feel a little bit sick when it gets tough."
