There were unusual scenes during Jelena Ostapenko's Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Barbora Krejcikova on Court No.1 on Wednesday as the Latvian banished a coach from her box - but only after her team were baffled at which one of them she wanted to leave.

Ostapenko was 4-3 up in the second set against the Czech but was involved in an agitated incident during which she gestured to her box that she wanted somebody one of them out.

But there were amusing images on BBC Two as nobody could work out who exactly the 14th seed wanted to leave the court as they pointed at one another with confused expressions. Eventually the man in question, seemingly Stas Khmarsky, left the arena.

Watching on, BBC commentator Pete Odgers said: "This is what we were talking about with Ostapenko. There is never a dull moment. She's motioning to her box - not sure if she was motioning for someone to leave but right now she's not happy."

Tracy Austin added: "He's saying 'Me? You want me to leave?' That's a lot of power!" Before Odgers said: "He's saying, 'Why?' As I said, right on cue, never a dull moment when Jelena Ostapenko is on a tennis court."

Austin stated: "She shouldn't worry about who is leaving and who is staying. She needs to realise she's still ahead in this set and focus on tactics and cleaning up her game."

While Odgers noticed that the man hadn't yet left: "Well they're staying, so not sure that will help her mood! The main reason for her frustration no doubt is having been a break up and let that slip."

But a frustrated Ostapenko did eventually get her wish and after slipping to 5-4 as Krejcikova won four straight games, she recovered to break and then won her own service game to lead 6-5.

At that point in the match, Odgers added: "This second set swings one way and the other. The pendulum is very much swinging the direction of Ostapenko having got rid of her coach which seemingly has done the business.

"Two games in a row since then and it's her turn to be a game away in set two." Austin said: "The coach is still gone! He might be able to watch from one of the monitors. I'm sure he's very curious."

Before Odgers concluded: "It was quite amusing wasn't it a few games ago. They didn't know who she wanted to leave. They eventually found out!

"I suppose as far as she is concerned, it's whatever Ostapenko wants to feel better out there and maybe with him gone he is feeling more comfortable."

The pair ultimately went to a tiebreak in which Krejcikova came out superior, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the semis. The Czech, who will face Elena Rybakina in the final four, said after winning: "I don't have any words right now! I'm really happy I gave it everything that I have.

"It's a great moment for me. It's an unbelievable moment that I'm experiencing right now in my tennis career. It was a difficult period, even before this tournament, I really want to thank my boys and my team who are here today.

"There have been many doubts from inside but also from the outside world. I'm super happy that I never gave up and that I'm standing here right now and that I'm in the semi-finals."
