Johanna Konta slammed by McEnroe after Wimbledon loss proves she has not learned lesson
JOHANNA KONTA losing in the quarter-final at Wimbledon proves she has not learned from her previous mistakes.
Wimbledon: McEnroe says Konta 'fell to pieces' in quarter-final
That is the opinion of three-time Wimbledon men’s singles champion John McEnroe.
Konta crashed out at SW19 at the last-eight stage, losing in straight sets to unseeded 33-year-old Barbora Strycova.
Konta led the first set 4-1 but ended up losing it 7-5 in a tie break.
That seemed to have a huge negative effect on the British No 1, as she only managed to win one game after that point to go down 6-1 in the second set.
It was disappointing to see her just fall to pieces after that lead she had in the first
McEnroe says he was amazed at the number of unforced errors from Konta, which reached 34 by the end of the match.
And he says it was disappointing to see how she “fell to pieces” after such a promising start on Centre Court.
“Well Strycova was tight in the beginning, she hadn’t been on Centre Court since I don’t know the last time,” McEnroe said on BBC One.
“But you could sense that she was a bit wound up and Konta came out strong.
“She mixed things up, she wasn’t going for too much and it seemed to me at 4-1 all of a sudden she got away from her own game plan.
“I think she had to assume that Strycova was going to give her the off-speed pitches, how are you going to handle the short balls?
“I was amazed at how many unforced errors [there were].
"I thought she had learned more from what had happened in the previous couple of years and the reason she has struggled with the ranking.
“So it was disappointing to see her just fall to pieces after that lead she had in the first.”
Strycova will now face seven-time champion Serena Williams in the semi-final on Thursday.
