Why Roger Federer defeat to Rafael Nadal could see emotional French Open goodbye
IF Roger Federer falls to a sixth French Open defeat against Rafael Nadal this afternoon it could be an emotional day for all involved.
French Open: Federer WILL get through predicts Hantuchova
Federer has excelled his own expectations on his first return to Roland Garros in four years.
Because of his ageing body, Federer had skipped the clay Grand Slam - his weakest surface - to ensure he was fully rested for Wimbledon.
However, the Swiss star shocked the tennis world when he announced he would be competing on the Parisian red dirt this term.
And he has done extremely well in setting up a semi-final showdown with the King of Clay Nadal.
The pair are set to do battle on court Philippe-Chatrier today (11.45am BST).
But could that be Federer’s final appearance in the French capital?
The 20-time Grand Slam winner will turn 38 later this year and his retirement has been looming for some time.
Federer signed a new clothing deal with Japanese firm Uniqlo last year and therefore he is expected to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
He has already admitted that trying to win the elusive gold medal is one of his career aims.
But that will only congest his schedule even more than it currently is.
It is highly unlikely Federer will miss his favourite tournament in the world - Wimbledon.
He has been crowned champion at the All England Club eight times, more than at any other major event.
French Open: Federer reveals he's exceeded his expectations
The dates pencilled in for the 2020 French Open are May 24 to June 6.
The grass season then commences the following day with Wimbledon kicking off on June 29.
Just weeks later, on July 24, the Olympic Games get underway meaning it could be three months of solid tennis for Federer.
And he turns 39 during the Olympics.
So will Federer play another French Open again after this year?
This afternoon could be emotional for everybody involved in the mouthwatering tie if Federer waves goodbye to clay.
