Roger Federer sends message to rivals with dominant Madrid Open win over Richard Gasquet
ROGER FEDERER showed he had lost none of his touch on clay as he needed less than an hour to beat Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-3 at the Madrid Open.
Madrid Open: Federer arrives ahead of Gasquet match
Federer stepped onto court at the Caja Magica for his first match on clay since 2016 and with a 17-2 winning record over Gasquet.
And the Swiss star made the perfect start to the match when he broke Gasquet in his opening service game and he never looked under threat on his own serve.
Federer won the first set 6-2 and Gasquet stuck with the 20-time Grand Slam champion in the second set.
But at 4-3, Gasquet's resistance was finally broken as Federer broke him to lead 5-3 and he served out the match with ease to seal his place in the third round.
