Serena Williams makes arrogant claim after booking her place in US Open final
SERENA WILLIAMS made an arguably arrogant claim after reaching the US Open final.
Williams - who trailed 2-0 in the opening set - was unstoppable as she roared back to claim a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Anastasija Sevastova.
The American will take part in her 31st Grand Slam final and will face either Madison Keys or Naomi Osaka in Saturday’s showpiece match.
Williams admitted after her semi-final win that she has been trying to perfect her volleying technique.
And she was arguably arrogant when revealing that she only comes to the net to “shake hands” with her opponent.
“I have been working hard on my volleys,” Williams said.
“I have won a few doubles championships so I know how to volley.
“I usually only come into the net to shake hands!
“But I was paying such a good player so I knew to have a chance I would have to come in.”
Williams also suggested that she’s taking nothing for granted and feels very grateful to still be playing tennis.
She added: “I am just so grateful that I have an opportunity to play this sport. No matter what happens in semi-finals or finals, I feel like I have already won by just being here.
"Anything for me is a win to come this far so fast. I am just beginning. It has only been a few months.
“I am looking forward to the rest of the year and next year. I am looking forward to the possibilities."
